Helix Piercing

Find the right helix piercing for you and your ears. Whether Stud or rings, at Lisa Eleni you will find high-quality helix jewelry in gold or white gold.

The helix has become increasingly popular in recent years and is now one of the most popular piercings. You can find out exactly what a helix piercing is, what you should consider when piercing, which jewelry you should choose and how to care for the piercing properly here.

Helix piercing position on the ear

What is a Helix Piercing?

The helix piercing is pierced at the upper, outer edge of the ear through the cartilage tissue. A distinction is made between flat helix, anti-helix, mid helix and normal helix. All helix piercings are located in the upper part of the ear, but in different areas. The flat helix is located further inwards in the pinna, the anti-helix is pierced opposite the normal helix and the mid helix is located further down, i.e. approximately in the middle on the outer edge.

Where exactly the helix piercing is pierced depends on the individual shape of the ear and the visual preferences. It can be pierced further up or further down. Often several helix piercings are pierced next to each other, the so-called double helix.

How painful is the Piercing?

Since the Helix Piercing goes through the ear cartilage and not the earlobe, it is one of the more painful piercings. The pain is approximately a 5/10, but can vary depending on individual pain tolerance.

The ideal Helix Piercing jewelry

Helix jewelry comes in many different designs. Simple segment rings, sparkling earrings with cubic zirconia stones, or unique Ear Studs Gold  with Chain. The helix piercing can be styled quite individually. What you should consider when choosing jewelry, what size you should choose and what materials are best suited, you can find out here.

The right size

The ear cartilage has a different thickness in each ear, so it is important to choose the right diameter for rings and the right length for studs.

With ear piercings, the size is usually adjusted after healing, i.e. a longer Stud length is used when piercing and then changed to a shorter one after healing. This is because the ear swells after piercing and is thicker due to the swelling.

With a helix piercing, the Stud should have a length of at least 8mm to 11mm when piercing, depending on the thickness of the cartilage. After healing, the length is then reduced to 6mm-8mm. The ring size for a healed helix piercing is usually 8mm to 10mm, depending on the thickness of the cartilage and taste.

The thickness of the needle with which cartilage piercings are pierced is always 1.2mm. It is therefore important that the material thickness of the earrings is also 1.2mm, otherwise the hole will shrink.

Materials

For a freshly pierced piercing, the material must be hypoallergenic and sterile, meaning it must be tolerated by everyone without causing allergies and must not transmit germs or bacteria.

Silver should never be worn on freshly pierced or inflamed piercings, as it can cause blood poisoning in the worst case.

Hypoallergenic materials include titanium, gold, white gold, and stainless steel. Piercing jewelry made of real gold and white gold is of the best quality because it is the most durable. We offer our earrings in the highest quality at fair prices. Thanks to the durable closures, they are perfect for helix piercings.

How long does a Helix Piercing take to heal?

The healing time takes about 6 to 12 months. Proper piercing aftercare is crucial. For rapid healing, we recommend getting piercings during the cooler seasons, i.e. spring, autumn or winter, as healing can be delayed in summer by the heat and sweat. In addition, contact with water should be avoided, which is also rather unsuitable in summer. The Helix Piercing must not be changed until it has completely healed, as germs can otherwise get into the wound.

Some piercers also offer to pierce a helix with a ring. However, we do not recommend piercing with a ring, as it can lengthen the healing process by up to 10 times. This is because the needle used for piercing is straight, and so is the piercing channel into which the piercing jewelry is inserted. Rings have a round shape that is not well suited for the straight piercing channel.
