The High / Upper Lobe Piercing is currently a very popular piercing trend, as more and more people do not wear just one earring, but combine several earrings on the ear. The piercing perfectly complements the "curated ear" look and can be styled individually and uniquely. In this guide you will learn everything about the High Lobe Piercing, what you should pay attention to when piercing and which jewelry is ideal for your piercing.
What is a High / Upper Lobe Piercing?
High lobe piercings, also called upper lobe piercings, are located in the upper area along the earlobe. Here, not only single earrings are worn, but two, three or even four earrings are combined on one earlobe. The ear holes can be pierced either side by side or on top of each other. The exact position of the high lobe piercing depends on personal taste and the shape of the ear.
Unlike cartilage piercings such as Helix, Conch, Rook, Tragus and Daith, which are pierced through the cartilage, the High Lobe Piercing is a standard piercing that passes through fatty tissue. For this reason, it can be shot with a needle as well as an ear piercing gun. Most ear piercing guns are made of plastic and therefore cannot be sterilized, which is why piercing with a piercing needle is safer.
How painful is the Piercing?
Piercing a high lobe piercing is hardly painful and feels similar to piercing a lobe piercing. This is because both piercings are pierced through the earlobe, which is made of pure tissue. High / Upper Lobe Piercing causes pain of about 2-3/10. Pain may vary depending on individual pain perception.
The ideal High Lobe Piercing Jewelry
High lobe piercing jewelry can be individually styled. There are countless possibilities, from boho looks with Chain and pendants, to sparkling celestial ear stacks with stars and lightning bolts, to classic, simple gold or silver looks.
Our collection includes high quality piercing jewelry made of 585 yellow gold and 585 white gold. The earrings are available in different sizes to perfectly fit any ear.
The right size
Since each ear is unique, not every earring fits every ear. Ears differ in thickness, size and shape. It is important to find out its suitable size before buying earrings. This can be easily measured with a small tape measure.
For an Upper / High Lobe Piercing, the diameter of the rings is usually between 6mm to 8mm. There is no maximum size. The higher the piercing is placed on the ear, the smaller the diameter becomes. In ear piercings usually have a length of 6mm, but in rare cases 8mm may be required. High lobe piercings are pierced with a needle thickness of 1mm to 1.2mm.
It is important to note that the ear swells after piercing. Therefore, a somewhat larger jewelry must be used at the beginning as the initial jewelry. Only after the swelling has subsided, you can change to a smaller size.
Materials
Only hypoallergenic and sterile materials should be used for the initial jewelry. This is the only way to ensure that no bacteria or germs enter the wound and allergic reactions are avoided. Hypoallergenic materials include gold, white gold, titanium, platinum, rhodium and stainless steel. Piercing jewelry made of gold and white gold is characterized by its durability.
Piercings with nickel content and pure silver piercings should not be worn under any circumstances, as nickel can cause allergic reactions and silver can transfer toxins to the human body due to oxidation, which could lead to blood poisoning.
How long does it take to heal a High Lobe Piercing?
For a complete healing of the High Lobe Piercing 6-12 weeks are required. For a smooth healing, the wound must be properly cared for, so feel free to read our blog post on piercing care. We recommend avoiding piercings in the summer, as water and UV radiation can delay wound healing. Contaminated ocean or pool water can bring germs and bacteria to the puncture site and cause infection or inflammation. Piercing with a ring can prolong the healing time up to 10 times, therefore a high lobe piercing should only be stitched with a Stud .
