Rook Piercing
The rook piercing is the perfect addition to your ear party. We explain exactly what a rook piercing is, how to care for it properly, and what you should pay attention to when getting it done.
How painful is the piercing?
The rook piercing is a relatively painful piercing. The pain rating is approximately 7/10, but can vary depending on your individual pain tolerance.
The right size
Usually, a larger earring diameter is used for piercing, as swelling must be taken into account.
After healing, the size is then reduced again. The inner diameter of rook rings is approximately 6 mm to 8 mm, depending on the thickness of the cartilage.
The earring for a rook piercing should be 1.2 mm thick, as cartilage piercings are always pierced with a 1.2 mm thick piercing needle. If the thickness of the earring is less than 1.2 mm, there is a risk that the hole will close up after a while.
Materials
Only hypoallergenic and sterile materials may be used as initial jewelry for freshly pierced piercings.
Suitable materials include stainless steel, gold, white gold, or titanium. They are hypoallergenic and sterilized by the piercer before piercing. Those looking for long-lasting jewelry for their piercing should choose gold. Gold piercings can also be worn all day long. Changing piercings frequently can be tedious, so our earrings feature high-quality backs that don't need to be removed, even at night.
Silver or gold-plated materials should never be worn on freshly pierced or infected piercings, as this can negatively affect the healing process
Recommended rings for rook piercings
Regardless of the choice of jewellery, conscientious aftercare is crucial for the healing of a rook piercing.
How long does it take for a rook piercing to heal?
It takes approximately 6 to 12 months for a rook piercing to heal. Proper piercing care is important for problem-free healing.
The best seasons to get a piercing are spring, fall, or winter, as healing can be impaired in summer by heat and contact with water. The rook piercing should not be changed before it has completely healed, as this can allow germs or bacteria to enter the wound.
Unlike most cartilage piercings on the ear, such as the helix, tragus, or conch, the rook piercing is done with a curved piercing needle. For this reason, curved jewelry is always used as the initial jewelry. Typically, a curved barbell is used. If a straight barbell is inserted into the curved piercing channel, healing can take up to 10 times longer. Only after complete healing can a barbell be changed.
What jewellery is suitable for a rook piercing?
Small rings or curved barbells are best suited for a rook piercing. The size of the rings is usually between 6mm and 8mm.
How painful is it to get a rook piercing?
The pain level is around 7/10. Therefore, the rook piercing is considered one of the more painful ear piercings.
Is it possible to sleep on a rook piercing?
For the first eight weeks after getting your rook piercing, you should absolutely avoid sleeping on it. Even after that, excessive pressure on the piercing often leads to irritation or inflammation. Therefore, we recommend avoiding sleeping on it for as long as necessary to ensure proper healing.
How long does it take to heal a rook?
The healing process can take 6 to 12 months, or even longer.
